Assistant Chief Richard L. Beecher

End of Watch: October 10, 1978

While conducting a search for an escaped murderer Chief Beecher flagged down a truck and stepped up on the running board to speak with the driver. After questioning the driver, he stepped down from the running board and was struck by a passing motorist. Chief Beecher was transported to the hospital where he died from his injuries several hours later.

Marshal John H. Bowman

End of Watch: January 29, 1903

Marshal Bowman was assassinated in front of his wife and four children when a suspect fired a shotgun through the front window of the Bowman residence. The assassination was an act of revenge for his tough stance on gambling and drinking. The suspect was arrested and sentenced to death, but the sentence was later commuted to life in prison.
